The Project

The Life of a Meteor project is an $800,000 NSF-funded collaborative grant in partnership with Northern Arizona University’s Advanced Media Lab and Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ. The immersive exhibit is a large-scale interactive touch-screen wall which translates complex meteor science, like Lowell Observatory’s LO-CAMS project, into accessible and interactive displays. The exhibit integrates real-time scientific research to help visitors visualize meteor trajectories and strike data across the Northern Hemisphere.

The lab partnered with Ideum Touch Screens to create the touch wall so that visitors of all ages could interact and learn from the scientists' research. The final exhibit is currently displayed at the Barringer Space Museum at Meteor Crater and Lowell Observatory.

Creating an Immersive Exhibit for All Ages

On the project, I served as a designer within a larger team tasked with building the interactive touch-screen. Our primary goal was to translate the dense meteor science, provided by Lowell scientists, into a cohesive and accessible user experience. We scouted multiple locations where the screen would be displayed and discussed environment elements like visitors, space, and height restrictions.

Throughout the design process, my focus was on supporting the team with user interface designs like menus, handles, and container elements. I also helped contribute to designing the modular layouts and information to accommodate the exhibit’s multi display elements such as quarter and full screens.

Through wireframing, prototyping, and team-wide feedback sessions, we ensured the exhibit remained accessible to visitors with varying learning styles and engagement preferences.
