Oregon Math Project

The Oregon Math Project (OMP) is a major effort under the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) to help advance and change the way math is viewed and presented in the state of Oregon. Its focus is on creating more equitable math experiences for all students in schools and increasing their mathematics proficiency. This project also supports the creation of more diverse and high-quality resources for educators, including school district administrators, counselors, and other math specialists.

Transforming Complex Information Into a Reliable Educator Resource

As educators and math specialists worked on the OMP, I was contracted to help create a High School Math Pathways Communication Toolkit. The team presented it as a high quality educator resource designed for school district educators, counselors, and administrators.

Originally intended to be a website project, I was presented with the challenge of transforming large and complex amounts of information into a cohesive and detailed toolkit report. The first weeks of the project involved detailed sorting and organization of the provided materials. Regular meetings with the team on what assets needed to be included were also important in laying out the foundation of the toolkit.

Final Toolkits

Utilizing helpful conversations and feedback circles, I created an interactive toolkit with a clear introduction on the project, followed by the purpose of the toolkit, and into the primary content which was divided into the four cornerstones of the OMP. With the toolkit being a significant length, an Executive Summary was also created to summarize and introduce the project to educators, counselors, and administrators.

Each decision was made with the goal of creating a simple, but comprehensive, tool-kit that helps communicate the efforts of the Oregon Math Project. It lives on the
Oregon Department of Education’s website under the Oregon Math Project category.

Final deliverables included the full Communication Toolkit, an Executive Summary, and a single-page style guide on how to maintain the kit itself.
